I ventured into the maritime industry in 2005, after graduating from nautical college in Nigeria.
By 2009, I found myself in the drilling industry. Since then I have not looked back!
During my cadetship in 2008, I came across Seadrill advert in a Nigerian newspaper. I applied and was offered the position of a painter as a starting point. Today, I am part of the bridge team.
My best moment still remains the day the MSL informed me of my promotion to Dynamic Positioning Operator Trainee. At the time, I was working as an Able Seaman. I knew it was the beginning of better days ahead and a dream come true.
Seadrill affords its staff the opportunities to grow irrespective of their nationality and background.
The company has invested massively in the training and development of its employees. I am a proud beneficiary of this vision.
Initially, communication was a challenge. But the cultural background of every crew is unique and I truly enjoy the ability to be able to crossbreed ideas while working on a drillship. It is of paramount importance for team members to work together and meet Seadrill’s objectives.
I particularly enjoy working in a multi-national environment. I am proud to have the opportunity to learn from people of various backgrounds and with a wealth of experience.
My day offshore starts with a pre-tour meeting, followed by station keeping on the dynamic positioning console. I am currently working on K-Pos DP III system manufactured by Kongsberg Maritime AS Norway. I also carry out other bridge duties required of a mariner and sometimes execute some tasks on deck.
After my tour, I spend one hour in the gymnasium, one hour studying and then rest for the day.
While at home, I spend time with my wife and family. We enjoy travelling around the continent of Africa for sight-seeing.

I had a heavy mining/fishing/farming background and that got me a start with R&B Falcon as a Roustabout. I graduated through the drilling department to get where I am now.
What I enjoy most about working for Seadrill is the challenge!
Seadrill has an advanced fleet and can adapt to demands and changes within the industry more effectively than most. That means there are excellent career opportunities and room to develop.
I have developed a lot, with plenty of on-the-job learning.
I have worked my way up from day one, but opportunities to progress have been better than ever since moving to Canada.
The culture here is always evolving. New people join and have an influence.
Since joining I have seen a developing sense of identity, moving us further towards being a leading offshore drilling company.
Operating offshore Newfoundland presents very specific challenges. Freezing fog, icebergs, 100ft waves, and temperatures nearing -20c are just a few. As a new contractor here, we have had to get up to speed quickly in dealing with these challenges effectively.
This could not be done without a strongly motivated team both offshore and onshore. The people really stand out here.
But my favourite moment so far at Seadrill happened when I was driller in Asia. We needed to get off the rig to do Chinese entry visas in Hong Kong. This took longer than expected so our whole crew got put on a 2010 Gulfstream to get us back to the rig quicker.
Going back to work has never been so much fun!
By contrast, life onshore involves lots of meetings, conference calls and emails!I report to the Rig Manager and take on anything to do with drilling and operations.
I deal with the client a lot regarding operations, technology, our equipment, capabilities and the specs of the rig. I help them come up with ideas about how they can achieve their goals.
Onshore we have formal events for the rig crew, like seminars focussing on things like safety. We also try to catch up with them informally on crew changes or if they are in town on training. We pop over, say hello and take them for dinner.
Seadrill is a fast-growing company and I'm growing too. I have more opportunities to develop my skills, knowledge and experience."
Before I joined Seadrill I was working as an electrician in a power plant, but I wanted to develop my career.
To do this, the oil and gas industry was the best place to go. That was when I found Seadrill, and applied for a job as assistant electrician.
I could see that they offered good career development opportunities.
Since joining, the training I've been given has helped me to grow my skills as an electrician working with cyberbase equipment. I have recently been promoted to Electrician and this has involved a lot of training courses (mostly in Singapore) to develop my skills as Electrician.
I also enjoy being able to work with people of different nationalities, and so I've learnt more about other cultures too. The culture here is amazing. We all live as a big family on the rig. There are a lot of people from different places around the world, but Seadrill manages to unite us as one.
They believe that their people are the main contributor to the development of the business, and that makes us feel appreciated. Offshore life can be challenging, having to leave our families behind. But Seadrill understands that, so they provide telephone and internet access for us to communicate with people at home.
One of the best things for me has been that Seadrill has put their trust in me, in doing my job correctly and safely.
They see me as a potential asset to the company, and so they trained me up to get me fully prepared. The career path here is clearly shown, and the training provided for career development is very well managed.

I could see that Seadrill is a solid company who could give me the opportunity to build my career.
I have both a marine and drilling background, having started off as a cadet on a container vessel. Next I worked in offshore supply to broaden my experience, then moved on to an offshore rig company and, after that, I applied to join Seadrill.
One of the reasons why I enjoy my job is being able to work with the range of equipment and systems in the rig technical area.
I’m working on a 6th generation drilling rig, with VFD thrusters and complex hydraulic and automation systems produced by Aker and Kongsberg.
I feel that I’ve really broadened my knowledge and skills since joining Seadrill.
The company has also given me the opportunity to attend training sessions on different types of equipment with manufacturers in Brazil and other countries.
My best moment here so far was when I was chosen to be the first Engine Room Operator to go into a program where I became a supervisor.
As well as being a great opportunity to demonstrate and share my experience, I’m also learning alongside my team and feel that I’m respected by them.
With Seadrill I’ve been able to develop a career plan, which helped me to achieve my current supervisory position, and also encourages me to work to progress into other roles.

When I finished my service in the Navy (submarine), around 13 years ago, I wanted to continue working in an exciting and dynamic working environment.
I worked as safety supervisor on the Drillship West Navigator for a number of years, and this gave me a good insight and understanding of the importance of continuous HSE work, and good procedures. In my role as driller, I’ve really benefited from this experience. I’ve also grown my skills working with a range of technology.
Offshore work is interesting and challenging, with a high focus on quality and performance. I’m always learning something new and developing further.
I’ve been given many courses and learning opportunities with Seadrill/North Atlantic, including well control training, and training on lifting and rigging operations. Every year we have performance appraisals, where we establish our goals and development plans.
I enjoy working with skilled, competent and professional colleagues, in a first class environment with a focus on safety and efficiency.
We all take safety work very seriously here, and are not afraid to say ‘stop’ if we see unsafe behaviour. It’s a positive culture, where we can all contribute to the shared goal of delivering quality operations to our customers.
Recreation facilities vary from rig to rig but most rigs have entertainment facilities, a gym with a sauna, computers and computer games, and newspapers.
Some of my best moments so far with Seadrill include drilling in Mauritania, West Africa, when I was given the opportunity to be part of the operation preparation team for an ultra deepwater semi-submersible, dual operation drilling rig. I also participated in taking out a new build from a shipyard in Korea, where I was involved from commissioning and acceptance testing to drilling in the North Sea, including HPHT drilling.
Other things I’ve enjoyed include Well Kill operation on the gas blow-out on the Elgin and Franklin field in the UK, drilling in the Faroe Islands, and being involved in the exploration campaign in the Barents Sea.
Living close to the office in Stavanger, I’ve been working in the office on different projects. This has given me a great insight into the work required to keep the rigs in operation, such as procurement and the maintenance of equipment and procedures.

My father worked at a drilling contractor, so I’d lived abroad for most of my life and had exposure to the industry through shipyard and office visits. When I went to college I knew this was a career path I wanted to pursue. I gained more experience during college by working on a production facility during a summer break, and found that my interest was primarily in drilling services.
When I found out about Seadrill’s training programme, I knew it would be the best way to gain experience in an industry that I wanted to make an impact in.
I felt that Seadrill’s emergent position in the industry would provide the best opportunities. The Regional Management Trainee (RMT) programme was a really exciting, albeit challenging, kickstart for a career.
The RMT programme gave me the chance to gain a broad exposure to the variety of roles involved in drilling operations. Over two years, I rotated throughout all departments on a rig while undertaking courses and certifications.
Phase one of my programme entailed two or three hitches per position in the drilling department. Going into year two, I transitioned from assignments in the Houston office and Gulf of Mexico up to Canada. I’ve been part of the West Hercules handover, including various intake projects focused on enabling the vessel to operate under Canadian regulations. Those kinds of experience are invaluable in terms of developing comprehensive understanding of how diverse operational support can be.
I really enjoy working in the dynamic environment that this opportunity provides. It’s encouraging seeing the company develop, just like I’ve developed on this programme. And now I’m taking it even further.
Having graduated from the Regional Management Trainee program, I have taken a new assignment as Rig Engineer for the West Hercules.
In my new position, I continue to develop. I’ve recently attended IWCF Well Control Training (Level 3 & 4 Supervisor Surface and Subsea combined). The pacing and breadth of topics covered in IWCF made it a challenging but rewarding course and solidified my understanding of well control fundamentals and drill through equipment.
I’m proud to have played my part in the simultaneous operations on the West Hercules recently. Besides maintaining safe and efficient drilling operations, we have had to coordinate with a third party and client to install a massive amount of equipment to be used for upcoming well testing operations. It has definitely been a team effort to install and test all this equipment.
Rig Engineer feels like a natural progression from the RMT program, and I am finding that the knowledge and skills gained from my training and time offshore is enhancing my abilities in this position. I look forward to seeing what other opportunities I can leverage from the training I’ve received.

Both my father and my uncle worked in offshore drilling, so it was in the family. I grew up overseas, moving around to different places my father was working. And when I was at college I spent summers working as a roustabout.
I joined the Navy and then went into merchant shipping. I’d gained my maritime license, so I took on a merchant position on a drillship in Brazil. After that I got a job as a chief mate in another company, eventually moving onshore working as an assistant rig manager and then rig manager. It was at this time that I was approached by Seadrill, as they were opening up their office in Houston.
I decided to join Seadrill as I felt they offered more challenges and responsibility. I like Seadrill’s attention to their people. It’s not all just about equipment and processes.
You can always find good iron on a rig, but it’s the people who make things happen and make sure we meet client expectations.
One of my best moments here so far was the delivery of West Vela from Korea into the Gulf of Mexico.
It was a very good start up in terms of the relationship with the client, and we had a fantastic crew who were very engaged. Many of them are new to the company, having joined in the past year as we brought the rig to the Gulf.
It’s been extremely busy and I’ve spent a lot of my time recently helping to develop the Seadrill culture with the new rig personnel.
Once in the Gulf, we began work with our client and the crews quickly caught on to the intervention work that was planned. We were ahead of schedule too – that was the icing on the cake.
I’m working on a 6th generation rig, so there’s lots of new technology on there – dynamic positioning systems, power management systems and drilling systems with cyberchairs.
Increased automation gives us an enjoyable challenge. There’s more to consider when it comes to maintenance and repairs, but it means we can learn more, and safety is enhanced too.
Planning operations with the client means I spend most of my time onshore, but I speak to the guys on the rig every day – maybe three or four times.
We’ve got a lot of excellent managers on board, who all came to Seadrill because they like the direction it’s going in. I also go offshore for a few days, auditing, to see where we are on the programme to make sure we’re keeping ahead of the schedule. It’s good to get a feel for morale too.
Seadrill has put a good deal of time and effort into the way the rigs are set up, particularly in terms of the HR advisors. It’s better here than any other company I’ve worked for.
It’s good to have that interaction, especially for the families of people offshore. They have a person, not a machine, to talk to – to answer any questions they might have. Things like this have a big impact on employees, on how they work and how they feel about it.
With Seadrill’s growth and rapidly advancing technology, it offers a wealth of training and development.
No matter where we come in, we have opportunities to train beyond our roles and grow our technical skills. I also get a lot of job satisfaction out of what I do. It’s the best move I’ve made in terms of my career.

Before joining Seadrill, I had always worked onshore, for oil and gas companies.
When Seadrill contacted me to offer the HR Manager role, I couldn’t resist the challenge.
It was my responsibility to build a new HR department and establish a good compensation and benefits package for Seadrill Angola.
The work itself is very rewarding. I think my proudest achievement so far was the smooth and successful transition of a critical unit to Seadrill’s responsibility.

I like it a lot. Since I really like to work, I can get my fill of it when I’m offshore, but then get a healthy break, time with my wife, and R&R at home.
My best moment so far with Seadrill was when I was given the opportunity to work in the subsea department.
I work mostly on hydraulics, but am surrounded and interact with anything from aviation to subsea conditions monitoring.
